Protect yourself: simple steps

  1. Hang up and call back yourself

Use a number you look up, not the one that called. Caller ID can be faked, even to show the sheriff's real number.

  2. Police don't collect money by phone

Sheriff's offices in Duval, St. Johns, Clay and Nassau have all warned that they don't call to demand money for warrants, jury duty or bond, and don't take gift cards, Bitcoin or payment apps.

  3. Never hand cash to a courier

No bank or government agency will ask you to withdraw cash and give it to a driver.

  4. Don't click links in surprise texts

Fake toll texts with links are going around Northeast Florida. Go to the real website yourself.

  5. Pick a family safe word

If "a grandchild" calls needing money, ask for the word.

  6. Freeze your credit

It's free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and it stops anyone opening accounts in your name.

  7. Turn on two-step login

Start with your email and your bank.

  8. Slow down and talk to someone

Scammers rush you. Anyone who says "don't tell anyone" or "stay on the line" is a red flag.
